Thelypteris kunthii (southern river fern)

General info: Thelypteris kunthii, commonly called southern river fern, is a North American native fern that thrives in medium to moist soils in full shade to partial shade. Instead of forming clumps this native fern spreads quickly and forms colonies. This fern can adapt to many different conditions. It can tolerate heat and occasional drought. It also will survive flooding, deep shade, and occasional direct sun. Southern river fern is semi evergreen in warmer areas and can reach heights up to four feet tall.

Landscape uses: Thelypteris kunthii is a super versatile native fern. It would be an excellent choice as a native groundcover in a shaded area. This would also be a great choice for habitat restoration projects because of its soil stabilizing properties.
