General info: Andropogon gerardii, commonly called big bluestem, is a North American native ornamental grass that thrives in dry to medium moisture soils in full sun. Big bluestem is the dominant prairie species in the midwest and is native to central and eastern US. This native clump forming grass can get up to four to eight feet tall and is drought tolerant.

Landscape uses: Andropogon gerardii has many different uses. This tall upright grass will reseed once established. It creates large root systems that help with erosion control. Big bluestem is also very drought tolerant making it the perfect native grass to use in dryer naturalized areas. It’s wonderful green, reddish leaves make for an attractive pop of color.
