Coreopsis verticilliata (threadleaf coreopsis)
General info: Coreopsis verticilliata, commonly called threadleaf Coreopsis, is a North American native perennial that thrives in dry to medium well drained soil in full sun. This native species grows best in sandy soils that drains well. It grows in loose bushy clumps that can reach up to three feet tall. This species will spread by self-seeding and by rhizomes. Threadleaf Coreopsis has very distinctive thin leaves. Hence where it gets its common name threadleaf from. Like most other Coreopsis it is adorned with bright yellow blooms. These flowers will continue to bloom from late spring to late summer. Clipping spent blooms may promote additional blooms.
Landscape uses: Coreopsis verticilliata is a great native wildflower for many different projects. You can use this species of Coreopsis to naturalize an area that has poor dry soil that other plants may not be able to tolerate. Secondly, threadleaf Coreopsis’s distinctive foliage gives this plant a fuzzy or airy texture. Which makes this a great option to help break up the texture in a garden bed. You can plant this species as a perennial border or use it in a native wildflower garden.
