Eryngium yuccifolium (rattlesnake master)

 

General info: Eryngium yuccifolium, commonly called rattlesnake master, is a North American native perennial that prefers dry to medium, sandy soils in full sun. This is a unique looking perennial. It gets its common name from its previous use treating rattlesnake bites. Rattlesnake master is typically found growing in rocky woods and prairies. It has very spikey blue green foliage and domed thistle like blooms that can have white to green hue. This species will get up to five feet tall and will bloom through summer into early fall.

Landscape uses: Eryngium yuccifolium is a great native species that can adapt to many soil types. It is drought tolerant and tolerant of moist soils. This striking plant is a great addition to a rock garden and would add nice height and texture. Rattlesnake master could also be used in naturalized areas.
