This species is typically found growing in sandy infertile soils. It is drought and heat tolerant. If grown in moist richer soils this species may flop over. Whirling butterflies will only get about three feet tall. Gaura is adorned with distinctive white delicate blooms that grow straight off the stem. These delicate blooms will dance in the wind resembling butterflies. Which is where it gets it common name. This cultivar must be grown from cuttings and cannot be grown from seed.
