Pycnanthemum muticum (mountain mint)

Pycnanthemum muticum (mountain mint)

General info: Pycnanthemum muticum, commonly called mountain mint, is a North American native herbaceous perennial. Mountain mint thrives in medium moist soils in full sun. This species of Pycnanthemum is less tolerant of drought than the other varieties. Be cautious when planting mountain mint because it can be a vigorous spreader. This clump forming herbaceous perennial can get about three feet tall and has strong mint aroma. This species grows easily in open grassy fields and low woodland areas with rich fertile soil. Unlike its common name this herbaceous perennial does not perform well in mountainous areas.

Landscape uses: Mountain mint is a very attractive perennial. Firstly, it is adorned with light green florets and a strong mint aroma. This species could be a great addition to a native herb garden. Secondly it is a wonderful attractor of butterflies and other native pollinators. Making it a perfect choice for a pollinator garden. Pycnanthemum muticum is wonderful when planted in mass or grouped and has mosquito repelling properties. Plant this species as a perennial border.
