Solidago caesia (bluestem goldenrod)
General info: Solidago caesia, commonly called bluestem goldenrod, is a North American native perennial that thrives in moist to dry well drained soil in full sun to part shade. This native species is typically found growing in rich woodlands across eastern United States. Bluestem goldenrod preforms best in full sun but can tolerate some shade. It will reach heights up to three feet tall and has distinctive greenish purple stems. This goldenrod is clump forming and does not spread aggressively like some goldenrods do.
Landscape uses: Solidago caesia is a very versatile native goldenrod. You can use this native in an area with poor dry soil. It can also take some shade but does best in full sun. Plant this goldenrod anywhere with dry poor soils all the way to moist sites and this species will give you a bright pop of color. Bluestem goldenrod is adorned with plenty of small delicate golden yellow blooms that bloom straight off the stems. Making this a perfect option for a native wildflower or cottage garden. These blooms also attract lots of bees and butterflies.
