This species is typically found growing in prairies and open woods. It is a clump forming tall erect species that can reach heights up to six feet tall. Yellow Indian grass is very tolerant of poor dry soils. It will flop over if planted in rich moist soils. It has distinctive blue green foliage and can be used in erosion control. This species gets it common name form its attractive yellow seed heads.
